Lakewood Ranch, FL. (NS/CGCert) -
A Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has been formed at The Colonial Grand Apartment Homes Complex in Lakewood Ranch...
The CERT Team's Founder and Captain is 25-year veteran Fire-Rescue Captain, Matt Bruce, originally from Upstate New York...
Mr. Bruce has extensive experience which includes responding to the 9/11 Attack on the World Trade Center in New York City and also responding to Hurricane's Charley, Katrina, Rita and Wilma as a FEMA Logistics Contractor in Florida, Mississippi and New Orleans, LA. In addition, Mr. Bruce is a member of the Manatee County ARES Team and American Red Cross Disaster Response Team...
The Colonial Grand CERT Team currently has 16 members who are responsible for the 288 Apartment Home Complex and is currently seeking to expand to 32 members. "That would give us 2 members per building," says Bruce...
Team Leader's include Randy Spivey, who has previous Hurricane Disaster related experience and Katy Auer. Even the Colonial Grand Apartment Homes Facility Manager, Karen Spivey, is a member of the CERT Team...
Since Colonial Grand is made up of Rentor's, they were not originally allowed membership into the Lakewood Ranch CERT Team. So, Matt Bruce, with the permission of Manatee County Emergency Management, started up a CERT Team made up of residents from the Colonial Grand Apartment Homes Complex. This is the first Apartment Complex in Manatee County to have started up their own CERT Team...
CERT Team members complete a 22 hour Training Course and are certified in Basic First Aid. Colonial Grand CERT is in the Town Center Lakewood Ranch CDD #3 and will respond to any emergency where they are needed...
Colonial Grand CERT is the only CERT Team in Lakewood Ranch that currently has radio communications in place that can reach both the State of Florida and Manatee County during any emergency. Using ARES Team operators and residents of Colonial Grand, communications and stored supplies have already been established...

Our special fundraiser: The last Sunday of each month is " Support the Troops" day at Cafe on The Bay. Reserve your space for the last Sunday of each month, when the Marines from Tampa's Fourth Amphibian Assault Vehicle Battalion visit our restaurant. They will arrive at Cafe on The Bay at 11:15 AM for Brunch from 9 am to 2 pm, then again from 5 pm to 9 pm. Join us in thanking them personally with a standing ovation as they enter in uniform. No politics just show them your appreciation and support. Donations will be accepted for two Marine funds, the all volunteer Tampa Marine Support Group and The Lance Corporal Andrew J. Aviles Scholarship Fund. Donations will help a Marine coming back from Iraq finish college. The Marines will be at our restaurant for dinner, arriving at 6:00 PM. A portion of food sales from both will go toward the Troop Support funds. View "Support the Troops" photo gallery at http://www.cafeonthebay.com/asy.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A 'National Day for Restaurants' is being created where portions of the Day's sales would be donated to our Military Troops. If you'd like to become involved and help our Nations Warriors, contact Ken Parsons at Cafe On The Bay localted at 5350 Gulf of Mexico Drive on beautiful Longboat Key, Florida. Dear 'Matt' -
I would like to thank you for your help in promoting our Fund raiser for the local Sarasota Marines being deployed to Iraq.
With major help from you and your News Sarasota website, we raised $ 4,605 for The Lance Corporal Andrew J. Aviles Scholarship Fund. We also continue to hear from people being referred by your News Sarasota website who are contributing to our local Marines deployed in Iraq.
This fund is in Memory of Lance Corporal Andrew J. Aviles fallen Marine comrade KIA in Iraq in April 2003.
We have also raised approximately $2,500 in supplies that are going to First Sergeant Gillian deployed in Iraq with 50 Marines from Company A, 4th AAV Bn. based out of Tampa.
Cafe on The Bay, Longboat Key, FL and Cafe L'Europe, St. Armands Circle are now drop off points for supplies getting shipped to Iraq. We will be collecting monies for the Scholarship Fund and also collecting supplies every day from now on.
Thanks again for your support! We couldn't have accomplished this without help from your News Sarasota website. God Bless You from the local Marines who are now headed for duty in Iraq.
May God also continue to bless your son who is on duty in Afghanistan helping keep America safe. As we approach Veterans Day and knowing you are a 2-time combat wounded and decorated Veteran, I would like to say 'Thank You' from all of us at Cafe On The Bay for your service to America.
When we have all this & pictures on our web site for people to see. We also fed and hosted 20 Marines and families as they stayed with us all day during our July 4th Offshore Grand Prix Festival and Boat Races held in Sarasota. All in all it has been a great success, and we appreciate what you have done to help us.
Many Thanks,
'Semper Fi'

Some Important Information... |
 | |
|
Emergency Cellular Telephone Numbers |
|
Even opponents of cellular telephone usage by drivers acknowledge their utility in an emergency situation. Here are the state police / highway patrol telephone numbers by state. Law enforcement agencies urge motorists to use these numbers only to report accidents, emergencies, impaired drivers, reckless drivers, vehicle problems, hazardous material spills and criminal behavior. We urge drivers to be aware of using their cellular telephones in a safe manner and to be aware of laws which prohibit using their phones while driving.
The National government and many states have mandated that 911 work from your cellular telephone. According to many Cellular Providers, they are making strides to accomplish this. Fair warning - your cellular telephone may or may not work with the numbers below. We urge you to check with the local or state authorities, before you travel.

The Creation of Florida
Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God was missing for six days...
(Of course, we know God is never missing, but this is a story).. Eventually, Michael, the Archangel, found him resting on the seventh day. He inquires of God, "Where have you been?"
God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downward through the clouds. "Look, Michael, look what I've made."
Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?"
"It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put life on it. I'm going to call it earth and it's going to be a great place of balance.
"Balance?" inquired Michael, still confused.
God explained, pointing to different parts of the earth, "For example, Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while Africa is going to be poor. The Middle East over there will be a hot spot," God continued, pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and while this one will be very cold and covered with ice."
The Archangel , impressed by God's work, then pointed to a large land mass with oceans as it borders and said, "What's that one?"
"Ah! ," said God, "that's Florida , the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful beaches, rivers, lakes, and climate. The people from Florida are going to be modest, intelligent, and humorous, and they are going to be found traveling the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking, and high achieving people, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace."
Michael gasped in wonder and admiration, but then exclaimed, "What about balance, God? You said there would be balance! Everyone and everything seems so totally perfect in this place you call Flor ida !"
God replied wisely, "Wait until you see the idiots I'm sending down from the North every winter!"
Welcome to Florida...
